We are fascinated by the diversity of microbial metabolism and its significance for life on this planet. In our research, we have chosen to focus on a selection of specific microorganisms.
We are studying how Bacteroidetes—very important and common gut bacteria—degrade polymers and convert them into short-chain fatty acids. This is not only important for our health but also of interest for biotechnological applications.
A particular focus of our interest is on extremophile microorganisms, especially heat-loving (thermophilic) microorganisms. It is possible that heat-loving microbes were the first inhabitants of the planet. We are conducting experiments to determine whether and how organisms capable of living at moderate temperatures might have evolved from them. We are investigating the metabolism of thermophilic microorganisms that utilize hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide to produce acetic acid. Using genetic methods, we aim to develop these into platform organisms for CO₂-positive industrial applications. In a species related to these gas-utilizing bacteria, we are studying alcohol production through the direct reduction of organic acids at 60°C.
